Yazmin Espinosa
owner of Yazbites
Yazmin Espinosa moved to California from Mexico on November of 2006 with her husband and the dream of a better life. She did not speak the language but with courage and some instruction she learned English and worked hard doing childcare and other jobs that are accessible to immigrants.
Yazmin says that she worked hard to make ends meet, but in her spare time she took arts and crafts classes as a hobby. “I learned to handcraft candy in Mexico. My mom was a retired teacher of arts and crafts and so she taught us. That became my hobby and I took courses in Mexico as well as here, but I didn’t know this was going to become a business.”
During the holidays, she started to make candy arrangements for family parties and as gifts. “My husband’s family is big, there are lots of kids and I couldn’t buy gifts for all of them. So I started making candy arrangements as gifts and decorations for
quinceneras, birthday parties and other celebrations.” Pretty soon the idea for a business had been born.
She first heard about Women’s Initiative on the morning TV show Al despertar. Yazmin says that Women’s Initiative gave her great motivation and support to turn her hobby into a business. “How to think as a business woman is the most important thing that Women’s Initiative taught me.” In addition to that, she says that the support system of women and the motivational videos made her realize that “Si, se puede!” or “Yes, we can!”
Her business, Yazbites, was launched the following weeks after Yazmin’s graduation in April of 2010. She makes beautiful edible arrangements with fruit, chocolate, candy and other beautiful and edible
ingredients. She markets mainly to the Hispanic community, however she has plans to expand to other markets soon. Not too long after she started her business, she got an award as the “Best Stand” in the Farmer’s Market Expo that happens twice a year in San Jose. She humbly says that what she is most proud of is her product, and she feels very gratified when she receives emails or compliments about her work.
Yazmin says that her business fully supports her and that she loves what she does. On top of that, she has time to enjoy her 2 year old son and still give back to the community by volunteering twice a month
with an organization called Sunday Friends www.sundayfriends.org.
This inspirational woman has been in business for about a year now, but if you take a look at her website (www.yazbites.com) you will see that pretty soon her dreams to open a store and expand to the diverse market possibilities will absolutely fly high!
