Graduate Spotlights Bianca Kaplan
Owner of Bianca Starr

Bay Area native Bianca Kaplan has always been a bargain shopper with an eye for fashion. She spent years amassing her one of a kind vintage collection, with clothing and accessories dating back to the 1930's.

In late October, 2009, her collection found a proper home on 20th Street in the Mission District of San Francisco. Bianca Starr is a women's boutique putting a uniquely clean and fresh spin on thrift shopping. All pieces are hand-selected, dry cleaned, and in some cases, altered for modern day wear; so shoppers have a feeling they've stepped into a walk-in vintage closet wonderland—minus the moth balls, stains, and funky old smell.

In business just over three months, the income from Bianca Starr supports Bianca's family of four. Her marketing strategy, networking, partnerships, and fun-filled evening shopping events are paying off.

Despite what her early success might have you believe, Bianca has not always been an entrepreneur. She’s held a variety of jobs from corporate positions to waitressing. And though she and her husband ran a business together previously, Bianca admits that they just went for it without really know what they were doing. Before opening Bianca Starr, her friend Josey White, Women’s Initiative graduate and owner of The Front Porch restaurant in San Francisco, suggested she take the Women’s Initiative course.

At Women’s Initiative, Bianca soaked up the technical business training; the program gave her the time and structure to “think it through” this time around. She credits Women's Initiative for supporting the development of her vision and says “my shop looks exactly like my vision board from class.” Bianca is now a SuccessLink member. She recently had her first session with Senior Trainer Nika Quirk and looks forward to taking full advantage of all the services to support her in business.
